Hit Man (1972)





Inhalt:
Der schwarze Macker "Tayrone Tackett" trifft aus Oakland anreisend in der Stadt der Engel ein, um seinen ermordeten kleinen Bruder die letzte Ehre zu erweisen. Als Tayrone kurz nach der Trauerfeier von 2 Gorillern der ansässigen Unterweltprominens den Rat bekommt doch am besten gleich wieder abzureisen, wird er neugierig, regt seine arrogante Nase in den Himmel und nimmt die Witterung auf.
Schnell findet der Mann raus warum sein Bruderherz sterben musste. Tayrones Nichte wurde zu Hardcoreaktivitäten genötigt. Nachden ihr Vater einschreiten wollte, wurde dieser eiskallt beseitigt. Tackett startet einen gnadenlosen Rachefeldzug und macht vor garnichts halt.

Wenn dem geneigten Leser nun die Story irgendwie bekannt vorkommen sollte, so hat er Recht. HIT MAN ist ein lupenreines Remake des ein Jahr vorher abgedrehten nihilistischen Brit Gangster Kult Klassikers GET CARTER von Mike Hodges. Hier im Blaxploitationgewand. Die Handlung ist 1 zu 1 übernommen, ja einige Szenen sind sogar genauso gedreht wie im Original, was eigentlich als Frechheit ohne Gleichen anmutet. Der Film ist trotzdem klasse und unterhält dem Freund des 70er Jahre Spielfims wirklich blendend. Als Hauptgrund muss BERNIE CASEY erwähnt werden. Der Mann hat Leinwandpräsens. Ob sich auf Plateausohlen fortbewegend, eine coole Kopfbedeckung nach der anderen auf der Birne tragend, oder im modischen Pimpgehrock bei der holden Weiblichkeit Eindruck scheffelnd, der schwarze Bruder rockt. Der charismatische Schauspieler Casey ist in seiner Karriere leider nur in Nebenrollen im Gedächtnis hängen geblieben. Freaks werden sich sicher gerne an seinen unglaublichen Shoutout mit HENRY SILVA in SHARKY'S MACHINE erinnern.(OFDb)

The steamy summer of 1974 Galveston, Texas is the backdrop for this "Blaxplotation" Classic...
The storyline, though choppy and mellow dramatic; offers a very real snapshot of 1970's Urban America. Big Afros, Race Based Slang, tube tops, Hip-Hugger Pants, Run-Down Shanties, Drugs, Pimps and assorted other stereotypes depicting the plight or making fun of a world left standing untouched in the wake of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement.
As with many movies of its day; the body of work would be considered racist, politically incorrect and possibly written off as bad cinema. Yet its cast of mostly unknowns, juxtaposed to a decaying industrial quadrant of 1970's Galveston, Texas actually works. Barry White issues a one and only sound track. Raw, and very indicative of the times. Citizen Kane, Shaft, Blackula, Super Fly, no! But, it has a plot, the over-riding theme is Over-Coming, not being overtaken by the environment, and for a 1974 audience starved for young Blacks out to help themselves by helping each other, it provides a nice little snack. This work may be hard to find, but if you can, check it out.

Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979) Comedy - Documentary

This was the first time a stand-up comedian was filmed doing his act, and most people predicted that it would fail. Bill Sargent had the idea of filming Pryor's act, but since most of the industry thought it would flop, they had trouble getting anyone to distribute it, so a few mavericks in the industry distributed it themselves. It was cheap to make, all the profits would be gravy, and the men who made it believed that people would respond to Richard Pryor's act. Video was just coming out and would soon be a force, and Pryor was at the top of his game, and the gamble paid off. Now we take for granted watching stand-up comedy on TV and everywhere else, but at the time bringing a comedy routine to the big screen, especially one as raunchy as Pryor's, was considered a huge risk.

But Pryor is on fire in front of his audience. He's honest and raw, and doesn't pull any punches. And because of that you'll laugh so hard your gut will bust. But when you watch this film it is of interest to realize that at the time it was filmed there was no "Def Comedy Jam." There was no Bill Cosby "Himself." That all came after this. Richard Pryor and a few daring producers brought this genre to life with this one act, and had it not been so incredibly good, it might not have become the money making and entertaining part of the industry that it is today.

Youngblood (1978)





Inhalt:
Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs was the box office draw, but the focus of Youngblood is actually the title character, played with reasonable conviction by What's Happening! semi-regular Bryan O'Dell. He's a not so street smart kid who wants to run with the Kingsmen, a local gang headed by Hilton-Jacobs, a returned Vietnam vet. The Kingsmen spend a lot of time drinking, beating up rival gang members, and abusing each other, but that doesn't mean they don't have a social conscience: when they lose a member to smack, the hunt is on for the dope pushers peddling junk in the 'hood. The story is familiar but is helped along by a uniformly good cast. War's score is excellent, especially the title track and Galaxy, featured in a disco scene heavily reminiscent of Soooooouuullllll Train. Watch for Ron Neal (Superfly) in a brief cameo as a high school gym teacher.

One of the most out of control films ever made, telling the story of an all female African American motorcycle gang out to rescue one of their member’s mother and catch the people responsible for her kidnapping. Little do they know the man responsible for the abduction is a mock Colonel Sanders, who owns a chain of successful BBQ resuraunts in the LA area. He’s developed a "Negro Making Machine" so he can create a larger customer base and has begun kidnapping random black people to use as test subjects.

Der nach außen hin freundliche, aber innerlich böse, Besitzer der BBQ-Restaurantkette entführt Schwarze aus dem Viertel um sie mit seiner Black-Clone-Machine zu klonen. Nur aus dem Grund das er mehr Kunden hat, denn Schwarze essen in Amerika sehr gerne BBQ... Doch als die Mutter von der mutigen Syreena, Anführerin einer Motortrikegang, entführt wird, geht das Abenteuer los.

Wuahhh...und wie das losgeht. Bunte, verrückte, farbige Frauen auf Trikes, machen Wettrennen gegen schrottige Vespas. Ein Polizeiauto mit überdimensionale Sirene und vier trotteligen Polizisten, versuche das Geschehen (und damit meine ich jedes Geschehen) erfolglos aufzuhalten. Einer der Polizisten, der ein kleines Problem mit Übergewicht hat, bleibt in jeder Tür hängen. Bescheuerte Motorrad Gangs, Pimps, KKK-Männer, Piggies, bunte Rauchwolken, verrückte Musicals, Karate, etc. etc. etc...

Mahogany (1975)





Inhalt:
Tracy, an aspiring designer from the slums of Chicago puts herself through fashion school in the hopes of becoming one of the world's top designers. Her ambition leads her to Rome spurring a choice between the man she loves or her newfound success.

Ghetto girl from Chicago wants to be a fashion designer, but her politician boyfriend wants her instead to help him take care of the unfortunates at home..."Mahogany" exists purely on adrenaline, and Ross is hyped-up, high on life, and her kicky fashion scenes are both entertaining and gaudy. The love story with Billy Dee Williams is relaxed, Anthony Perkins is loose and campy as a gay shutterbug who puts the moves on La Ross, and the decadent, glamorous surroundings are fun escapism. As for the finale, it is truly gauche..

Der Film spielt zum großen Teil in Rom und erinnert mich etwas an die Euro Streifen der 70er Jahre, was nicht zuletzt an Marisa Mells (Danger Diabolik) Mitwirkung liegt.
Sehr stylish und für die damalige Zeit absolut hip in Szene gesetzt, hat der Film bis heute nichts an seiner Wirkung verloren und ist einfach ein Fest fürs Auge, mit einer wirklich guten Story und einem "genial kranken" Anthony Perkins!

Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White) hat seinen Namen redlich verdient, denn der Elitekämpfer ist pures Dynamit, doch mit einem Herz aus Gold. Als fiese Gangster jedoch seinen Bruder erschießen, kehrt Black Dynamite seine weniger freundliche Seite heraus und räumt im Viertel auf. Pech für alle, die ihm in den Weg kommen...

Here's a film that would have fit perfectly with the 2007 release of Grindhouse. I wish that Black Dynamite had been worked on enough so that a trailer would have been featured along with the faux trailers in Grindhouse. (Although one of those faux trailers, Machete, is being made into a full-length feature.) Michael Jai White (who is probably known best as Spawn or as the ill-fated gangster, Gambol, from The Dark Knight) is excellent as Black Dynamite. White is not only an excellent action star, but he's also got great comedic timing. His deadpan delivery mixed in with very impressive martial arts abilities are worth the price of admission for this flick. White channels Richard Roundtree, Robert Hooks, Fred Williamson, and yet he even makes the role his own. How White hasn't become a prominent action star, much like Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Tony Jaa, and so on is a complete mystery to me. I hope that this is a breakout role for him.

One of my favorite characters in this film is Bullhorn (played by Byron Minns). He's the film's answer to Rudy Ray Moore, rhymes and all. For those who have seen Dolemite, you'll know what I'm talking about. (He also narrated the hilarious trailers for the movie.) The film features a cast full of what's his faces. Richard Edson (Stranger than Paradise and Do the Right Thing) has a brief role in the film. Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump) plays one of the villains, Chicago Wind. Mike Starr (Goodfellas and Dumb & Dumber) plays the mob leader. Arsenio Hall, of all people, plays a coked out hustler named Tasty Freeze. Tommy Davidson, with a head of curly hair, appears as one of Black Dyamite's sidekicks, Cream Corn.

This film is a throwback to the 70's, with the classics of Blaxploitation. It not only has a lot of laughs, but I also felt that the movie essentially became a Blaxploitation within a half-hour into the movie.

If you're a fan of Blaxploitation films, this will not disappoint. If you're in for a good comedy, check this one out. It will provide more laughs than a good majority of the comedies released this year

Norman... Is That You? (1976)

After wife Beatrice (Pearl Bailey) runs off to Mexico, a despondent Ben Chambers (Redd Foxx) travels to California to visit his son, Norman (Michael Warren). To Ben's dismay, Norman admits that he's gay -- and that his lover is a white man.

Making a film of a flop Broadway play that felt like a stale television sitcom is an odd thing to do, but the makers of Norman Is That You? did it anyway. Though the film was hopelessly dated even when it was made in 1976, time has only diminished Norman's charms, which were mostly theoretical to begin with. It's possible to make an outrageously funny film about a contrived situation with stereotypical characters, but only if the filmmakers realize how contrived and stereotyped the situations and characters are, and play off of that in some way. Director George Schlatter makes the mistake of taking his, Ron Clark's, and Sam Bobrick's screenplay at face value. Matters are not helped by a visual style that -- thanks to the movie being shot on video and transferred to film -- is bland to say the least. Norman is not a total loss; for one thing, it does have a groovy Motown soundtrack that is not only enjoyable in its own right but occasionally has the added bonus of drowning out or distracting from some of the dialogue. And Norman has in Redd Foxx and Pearl Bailey two highly accomplished comic stars who do everything they can to convince the audience that this material is good (they deserve much better). Mike Warren does well with an impossible part, and Dennis Dugan does absolutely as best as can be expected with his flame stereotype. None of it makes Norman good, but it does make it bearable

...one of my favorite comedies. It stars Redd Foxx as a father who tries to understand his son's homosexuality. Like most parents, he doesn't know a thing about what it means to be gay and has all of these stereotypical notions of what gay people are like. His son, Norman, is now grown up and living on his own. When his father, Ben, finds out that his son is gay, he pays his son a visit in hopes of changing him. The title comes from one of the funniest lines in the movie--when Ben gets to Norman's apartments he runs into a female prostitute and thinks it's his son in drag ("Norman... Is that you?"). The movie had me laughing from start to finish. Redd Foxx is great. Although a lot of the content is stereotypical, I didn't find anything offensive about the way the material was handled, and it even has a good ending. Highly recommended.

Weil sein Boß nach dem Verkauf einer großen Rinderherde in Sonora einem Herzinfarkt erlegen ist, bekommt der farbige Vormann Pike den Auftrag, den Erlös der Witwe zu überbringen. Kein leichter Auftrag, denn allerlei zwielichtige Elemente haben Kenntnis von der Sache erhalten und verfolgen den wackeren Pike...

Gelungener Western von Antonio Magheriti, der dank seiner Protagonisten Jim Brown und Fred Williamson mehr als nur einen Hauch Blaxploitation atmet. Gute Atmo und Kameraführung sowie ein passender Score steuern ebenfalls ihr Scherflein zum Gelingen bei.
Auch Jim Kelly hat seinen festen Platz im Blaxploitationfilm, in den er zumeist seine Karatekenntnisse einbrachte: Als nahkampferprobter Indianer wirkt er hier allerdings, sagen wir, eher interessant. Van Cleef als Hauptfigur der Schurkenseite bietet wieder eine Colonel-Mortimer-Variante mit Matte an, inklusive Armeemantel und Pfeife. Darüber hinaus geben sich einige Ikonen des US-amerikanischen Westerns die Ehre, wie Dana Andrews und Harry Carey Jr.. Der deutsche Titel ist einmal mehr bemerkenswert, da es sich bei diesem Film offensichtlich nicht um eine Komödie handelt, wenngleich sich die deutsche Synchro Mühe gibt, ihn in die entsprechende Richtung zu bürsten.

In einer kleinen Stadt in Alabama machen sich in den 60er Jahren die Bürgerrechtsbewegung der Farbigen mehr und mehr bemerkbar. Demonstrationen müssen gewährt werden, um die Bürger an die Urne zu bringen. Doch der örtliche Klu-Klux-Klan sieht das gar nicht gern, woraufhin Sheriff Bascomb (Lee Marvin) alle Hände voll zu tun hat, die Gemüter zu beruhigen. Als jedoch ein Schwarzer eine Weiße (Linda Evans) vergewaltigt und die örtlichen Fanatiker wahllos einen Farbigen kastrieren und erschießen, greift dessen Kumpel Garth (O.J.Simpson) zur Selbstjustiz und erledigt die Mörder nacheinander aus dem Hinterhalt. Daraufhin beginnt ein gefährliches Kesseltreiben, dessen Ziel der Farmer Stancill (Richard Burton) ist, der kostenlos Farbige auf seinem Grund leben läßt. Die Wut der rassistischen Kleinbürger ist grenzenlos...

Auf der Scheibe gabs nur deutschen Ton, dafür ist der Film uncut.

The Klansman could be one of two things. It is either a brave exploration of racial hatred and violence in the US Deep South. Or, it is a reckless film which is trying to generate entertainment by exploiting racial tension. I don't agree with the majority of critics who say that this film is violent and trashy rubbish.... in my eyes, it poses enough interesting questions and pushes the audience out of their comfort zone sufficiently to be a worthwhile film. I wouldn't say that it's a great, misunderstood masterpiece, but it is definitely a film that needs reappraisal.

The story is set in Atoka County, Alabama, where race relations are balanced on a knife edge. The rape of a white woman by a negro triggers off a campaign of Ku Klux Klan violence, including the castration of a black youth, which in turn leads to retaliation by black extremists such as O.J. Simpson. Thrown into the struggles are Lee Marvin (the town sherriff who knows that racism is bad but tolerates it in order to cling to a degree of order) and Richard Burton (a landowner who sympathises with blacks, but is haunted by memories of what the Klan did to his grand father).

The film contains at least one unwatchable rape scene and some tasteless dialogue. It also suffers because Burton is so clearly miscast as a southern sympathiser (his accent is dodgy and he seems disinterested in the story). However, it takes a highly chraged theme and deals with it interestingly and provocatively. The violence jolts you out of your chair and forces you to think about the two sides of the argument. The climax is memorable and leaves you feeling empty and sick, especially at the waste of life caused by the single-minded, lethal actions of racist extremists.

A decent film, then, worth seeing for yourself. The critics got this one wrong. Give it a go
